Plant ID: Sydney Blue Gum (Eucalyptus saligna)

Plant ID: Eucalyptus saligna (Sydney Blue Gum)

Genus: Eucalyptus
Species: saligna
Family: MYRTACEAE
Common name: Sydney Blue Gum
Plant type: Evergreen
Origin: Wet sclerophyll forests of New South Wales and Southern Queensland

Habit/Form:

Think of this tree as one of the main prototypes for most of the Gum trees you'll see, especially in neighbourhood streets. Definitely can grow/be classified as a large tree rather than small. In its natural habitat you'll see saligna spread in large groups or clusters. In dense clusters, saligna can be tall and slender with a crown mixing in with others at the top. In open areas and in city/suburbs saligna can have a decent thickness in trunk and an irregular crown making its way toward the top. Usually a single trunked tree. If you were forming a team of Gum trees, saligna would be one of your blue-collar work horses, a reliable, vigorous, tough tree that can reach heights over 60m and has a long lifespan.

Branches grow at generally 60degrees from the trunk, with a lot of mid-canopy growth, creating that ascending open irregular crown.

E. saligna has a consistently distinctive short stock of grey/brown flaking bark at the base of the trunk with the rest of the tree being creamy white smooth bark that may also have patches of blueish-grey. The flaking bark sheds annually in short ribbons. Yes the pale smooth bark can appear to radiate a bluish tint like a light/faint cyan mixed with light grey. Some may have patches or mottles of darker grey/blue-grey.

Keep in mind that the flaking bark at the base can sometimes almost entirely fall off so that the tree appears to be completely smooth. But if you look closely you can usually see some remaining flaky stock close to the ground.

Leaves:

The usual popular Eucalyptus leaf shapes, juvenile are ovate, opposite, 80-140mm x 30-50mm, adult are lanceolate/falcate, alternate, 90-170mm x 20-30mm, discolourous, shiny dark green top, pale green beneath.

Flower:

Dense clusters of 7-11 creamy white flowers in the axils at the end of branches. Buds have a conical bud cap.

Fruit:

Bell or pear shaped 5-8mm x 4-7mm capsule with protruding valves or teeth around the inner rim of capsule.
