Brazilian Cherry China

Japan Tortoise Beetle

Tortoise beetles are tiny insects endowed with a curious adaptation. The outer shell is extended greatly to cover the entire body including the head. The shell curves gently at the ends providing a nice lip where the shell rests against a plant leaf. These plant eaters are often very brightly colored though the coloration curiously fades as the insect dies. Tortoise beetles are of the insect order Coleoptera, family Chrysomelidae and subfamily Cassidinae.

Charidotella egregia changes colour

When disturbed, the tortoise beetle Charidotella egregia slowly changes colour, from metallic yellow (gold metal aspect) to a more diffusive red. The insect tegument contains a double colouring layer: the deepest is a pigmentary red, covered by a structural mirror which uses wave interference to reflect light. When dry, the mirror is destroyed because the structure becomes disordered, so that the red pigmentation appears. See Phys. Rev. E 76, 031907 (2007).
